Greek hospital quality by region — a diaspora property owner's reference.
Knowing where the nearest quality hospital is — and how to get there — matters for any property owner who spends meaningful time in Greece. Major regional hospitals, private facilities, and what to expect by region.
The Greek healthcare landscape briefly
Greek public hospitals (ΕΣΥ — Εθνικό Σύστημα Υγείας) form the core of the system. Major-city public hospitals are well-equipped and generally well-staffed. Regional and rural facilities vary more. Private hospitals supplement the public system, particularly in Athens and Thessaloniki. EU citizens and S1-holders access the public system; others typically need private insurance.
By region
Athens
Best public hospitals: Evangelismos (Kolonaki), Laiko (Athens centre), Sismanoglio (Marousi), Attiko (Haidari), Aglaia Kyriakou Children's Hospital. Strong cardiac, oncology, neurology specialist centres.
Major private: Henry Dunant, Hygeia, Mitera (women's/maternity, also general), Metropolitan, Iatriko Athinon. Excellent quality, English-speaking staff, faster access than public for elective procedures.
For Athens-property owners, both public and private options are within 30-45 minutes of most residential neighbourhoods.
Athens Riviera
Asklepieio Voulas hospital serves Glyfada/Voula/Vouliagmeni for public care. Athens private hospitals are 20-30 minutes away. Glyfada-area Golden Visa owners have good healthcare access without driving to central Athens.
Thessaloniki
Best public: AHEPA (university hospital, broad capability), Ippokratio (general), Papageorgiou (newer, large), Theageneio (oncology specialist).
Major private: Bioclinic, Interbalkan European Medical Center. Strong general capability; less private depth than Athens but adequate for most needs.
Crete
Heraklion University Hospital is the regional referral centre with broad capability including cardiology, oncology, neurology. Chania General Hospital serves western Crete. For Apokoronas-area residents, Chania hospital is 30 minutes — adequate for most needs; serious cases sometimes referred to Heraklion or Athens.
Peloponnese
Patras (broader Achaia region) has the largest hospital — Rio University Hospital. Kalamata General Hospital serves Messinia and southern Peloponnese. Smaller regional hospitals in Nafplio, Sparta, Tripoli. Helicopter transfer to Athens for serious cases — distance from much of the Peloponnese to Athens-level specialist care is meaningful (3-5 hours by road).
For Mani property owners: Kalamata is 45-90 minutes depending on village. Plan for this in any major medical scenario.
Volos / Pelion
Volos General Hospital is well-equipped for the region. For Pelion village owners, expect 30-60 minutes to Volos. Athens-level specialist care is 4 hours by road via the motorway.
Halkidiki
Polygyros General Hospital is the regional centre. Thessaloniki private and public facilities are 60-90 minutes from most Halkidiki properties — most foreign-owner property is closer to Thessaloniki hospitals than Polygyros.
Larger islands (Rhodes, Corfu, Lesvos)
Each has a General Hospital that handles most non-specialist care. Serious cases transferred to Athens or Thessaloniki by air. For owners with regular visits, plan around this. EU emergency air-transfer arrangements typically work; specifics depend on insurance.
Smaller islands (Cyclades, Sporades, smaller Dodecanese)
Local health centres (κέντρα υγείας) for routine care. Serious cases transferred — Naxos to Athens, Mykonos/Santorini to Athens by air, Skyros via mainland. Air transfer arrangements during weather windows; Greek government and EKAB (Emergency Medical Service) coordinate emergency air evacuation.
For property owners on smaller islands with significant health concerns, location of care matters more in property decisions than in much of Europe. See our Symi & Patmos piece for the ferry-only context.
What to organise as a property owner
- Identify nearest hospital appropriate for your likely needs (general, cardiac, etc.)
- Map drive time / transport from your property
- Document English-speaking GP contact in your area (Apokoronas, central Athens, Thessaloniki — easy. Smaller villages — harder)
- Maintain travel insurance covering medical evacuation if your home-country insurance doesn't extend abroad adequately
- S1 form for UK pensioners (see our healthcare transition guide)
For most owners, "near a decent hospital" is one of several considerations. We can talk through your specific situation. Schedule a 30-minute call.
